Let the Games begin!

Torino welcomed the world with a spectacular opening ceremony full of "Rhythm, Passion and Speed," as promised by the show's producers. An estimated 2 billion television viewers and another 35,000 people inside Stadio Olimpico watched the inauguration of the XX Olympic Winter Games.

A synthesis of urban identity and mountain culture, the expression of a territory rich in highly valuable environmental resources, Torino, the first capital city of Italy and since then always “Capital of the Alps”, aims to become for the next 17 days the world capital of sport, but also of peace, tolerance and dialogue among peoples.

The Olympic Flame Lit in Olympia

The start of the XX Olympic Winter Games – Torino 2006 drew a step closer today as the Olympic Flame was kindled in Olympia, Greece. Ignited in the traditional way by the High Priestess, actress Theodora Siarkou, the flame was then used to light the official torch of the Turin Games.
